JDC West business competition and Inter-Collegiate Business Competition concludes successful weekend for both Paul J. Hill Business School Teams

News Release Release Date: January 21, 2015 4:00 p.m.

The Paul J. Hill School of Business excelled again in the Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (ICBC) held at Queen’s University, in Kingston, Ontario on January 15-17, 2015.

The Hill School sent three academic teams to the final round of Canada’s premiere undergraduate business case competition. This is the fifth year of the last six that the Hill School had teams place in the top three at ICBC.

The marketing team finished first and the debate team finished third overall.

Now in its 37th year, this year saw 145 teams from 31 national and international business schools compete in the preliminary round of the competition in October. Students competed in Accounting, Business Policy, Ethics, Finance, Human Resources, Marketing and Management of Information systems. The Hill School was one of 14 schools to have teams advance to the second and final round.

In the final round, teams with the top 6 overall placements are invited to bring a debate team. This is the third time in four years that the Hill School has been invited to bring a debate team.

At the same time, nearly 650 students from 12 of western Canada’s top universities travelled to Victoria, BC to compete in the 2015 JDC West business case competition. The Paul J. Hill School of Business team placed third in both School of the Year and Academic School of the Year categories. The Hill team has now placed in the top three as School of the Year seven times in the 10-year history of the competition, more than any other competing school.

University of Regina teams placed first in Business Strategy, Debate, Participation, Most Volunteer Hours and Most Money Raised for local charities, and second in Finance.

Now in its 10th year, JDC West is a student-run competition providing opportunities for business students in western Canada to achieve excellence in academics, social responsibility, sporting, and social competitions. Next year’s competition will be held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

“These finishes at JDC West and ICBC are incredible feats to attain year over year,” said Dr. Andrew Gaudes, Dean of Business Administration at the University of Regina. “Students are presented with business case situations where they must prepare solutions under pressure of time and present to a jury of academic and professional experts in specialized areas. The competition is intense, and the adjudication is ruthless. Time and time again, the Hill students enter into these competitions and leave with the judges’ jaws dropped and humble expressions of a job well done.”

NOTE TO MEDIA: An event to congratulate the students who competed at the JDC West Business Competition and Inter-Collegiate Business Competition will be held on Thursday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. in the Administration-Humanities Pit (main floor of the Ad-Hum Building).
