Experts in the area of climate change will share their views at the University of Regina, as the world gears up for the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, November 30.

The event, “Between Science and Politics: How are Negotiations Shaping Up for the Paris Conference on Climate Change,” takes place November 5, 2015 at the Language Institute Building.

The public is encouraged to attend.

The session will feature a round table discussion with four guests:

-Jean-Christophe Fleury, Consul General of France in Vancouver.
-Steven Guilbeault, spokesperson for the environmentalist organization Équiterre.
-Jean Lemire, biologist and filmmaker.
-Dr. David Sauchyn, a scientific expert on adaptation to climate change from the University of Regina.

The bilingual session is co-hosted by La Cité Universitaire Francophone and the Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS).

“We are honoured to receive four guests who have, in different ways, an expertise on climate change and climate change negotiations, as well as a willingness to share this knowledge with a broad audience,” says Dr. Bruno Dupeyron, associate professor at JSGS who is the moderator.
“The format will be informal and will allow conversations among panelists and exchanges with the public.”

Dr. David Sauchyn credits Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and La Cité Universitaire Francophone for taking the initiative to encourage discussion of the critical and timely topic of climate change.

“There is an interesting, and sometimes convoluted, relationship between the science of climate change and policy making to address it. During the negotiating process science is sometimes used selectively to support a position or an agenda. At least that is the way scientists may see it,” says Dr. Sauchyn who is a professor of Geography and researcher at Prairie Adaptation Research Collaborative located at the U of R.

Presenters will speak in English and French and translation services will be available.

“Our intention is to offer a better understanding of the stakes and perspectives of the climate change conference, to understand what Canada’s role may be and to facilitate the exchange of viewpoints between researchers and practitioners,” says Dr. Dupeyron.
