Open Minds discussion examines depression in different parts of the world

Media Advisory Release Date: November 23, 2015 9:40 a.m.

Members of the media are invited to the November installment of the Open Minds discussion series tonight. This series, which brings University of Regina professors to the community to debate timely hot topics, will examine the treatment of depression in other cultures in a talk entitled - “Depression in Canada and Around the World: Developing Treatments that Work for Different Cultures”.

The discussion will be led by Dr. Shadi Beshai, assistant professor in the Department of Psychology. Depression is a prevalent, debilitating, and economically burdensome condition, he contends. While the West has developed some effective treatments for the disorder, more research needs to be done to assess the appropriateness and effectiveness for these treatments in other regions of the world. Dr. Beshai will explore this issue with a particular focus on depression in Egypt and the Middle East. He has done extensive research into understanding major depression, adult Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the cultural affects on psychotherapy outcomes.
