Best Buddies helping make the U of R more inclusive

The University of Regina chapter of Best Buddies is seeking support from the campus community.

The group is holding a fundraiser gala May 20, at the Conexus Arts Centre.

Best Buddies is a non-profit organization helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities find friendships.
 
“Sharing is caring, and by sharing your life experience you can make a difference in someone’s life,” says Haris Khan, who is a third year student in environmental sciences.

Khan is also a comedian and will be one of the performers at the gala.

Best Buddies pairs students with individuals with intellectual disabilities. The program gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to enjoy the company of a good friend.
 
 Khan is buddies with Dylan Morin, who through the university’s Campus For All program, takes classes at the U of R.
 
“It is just like being a big brother. You help your buddy grow and learn. It’s a two-way street, really. I find I learn a lot just by hanging around with Dylan,” says Khan.
 
There are about 40 members of the Best Buddies U of R chapter. The volunteers are helping make the campus an even more inclusive place.

“We are grateful for all of the support we get from the University and from fellow students. All the money we raise will be shared among local Best Buddies chapters and used to help plan social activities,” says Khan.
