For students worried about debt and budgeting, there is help. Students are invited to a special session called “Financial Literacy – Budgeting, Borrowing and Paying off Debt.” It happens Thursday, November 24 from 2:35 pm to 4 pm at CK 187 on campus.

The session is led by money managing experts from the Conexus Credit Union, Andrea Phippen and Makayla McKenzie.

Andrea
Andrea Phippen is Manager of Financial Services at Conexus Credit Union.
The session will cover a wide variety of topics including:
  • How to set up a realistic budget and stick to it
  • Why not all loans are created equal
  • The difference between good and bad debt
“As I was a student for many years at the U of R, I know how very easy it can be to live in the moment and not plan or prepare for your financial future, because that was my reality as a student” says  Phippen, who is Manager of Financial Services at Conexus Credit Union.

Makayla
Makayla McKenzie is a Financial Services Supervisor at Conexus.

“We will be exploring areas that focus on having an understanding of savings, an understanding of debt and how it works, as well as managing debt. This information is vital to understand finances and achieving financial wellness. Had I learned this information while I was taking classes, I would be in a much better financial position today.”

Phippen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Psychology and a Masters in Human Resource Management from the U of R’s Kenneth Levene Graduate School of Business.

“Dealing with money matters can be intimidating. When we think of money, we tend to push it aside, especially when it comes to debt and managing debt,” says McKenzine, who is a Financial Services Supervisor at Conexus. “We want students to also be aware of being debt smart, which includes negotiating with creditors. Our goal for the presentation is to share with students that there are options out there for them to support them in moving forward financially.”

The workshop is hosted by the U of R Alumni Engagement Office and the Alumni Association. All students are welcome to attend.
