Author and Globe and Mail columnist Sheema Khan to deliver the 2017 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture

Media are invited to attend the 2017 Woodrow Lloyd Lecture featuring Dr. Sheema Khan, author of the book Of Hockey and Hijab: Reflections of a Canadian Muslim Woman, and columnist for the Global and Mail newspaper. Khan will explore the experience of Islamophobia and its impact of Muslim women in Canada in a public talk entitled “Islamophobia and Muslim Women in Canada.”

Khan holds a B.Sc. in chemistry at McGill University, a master’s degree in physics and a PhD in chemical physics from Harvard University. Since 2001 Khan’s work has been in the field of intellectual property law. She has written about Canada’s innovation strategy for the Globe and Mail’s Report on Business, and since 2002 has also written a monthly column on Islam and the Muslim experience. Her writing explores what it means to be a modern, liberal, and practicing Muslim, particularly within the Canada context.
 
Khan has founded numerous Muslim organizations; one of her most noted endeavours has been “The Family Honour Project,” a comprehensive, multinational approach toward combating honour-based violence. In 2012, she was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for her service to Canada.
