L’Université de Regina est à la recherche d’un nouveau nom pour l’édifice Language Institute.

Les étudiants, anciens étudiants, employés, membres du corps professoral et le grand public sont invités à proposer jusqu’à trois noms pour le bâtiment et à expliquer en quoi leurs propositions reflètent plus fidèlement l’histoire et la raison d’être de l’édifice.

« Le Language Institute, situé sur le campus principal de l’Université, a été inauguré en 1991 sous son nom actuel par la gouverneure générale Jeanne Sauvé. Depuis plusieurs années, les discussions au sein de la communauté ont soulevé l’idée que le nom actuel ne reflète pas fidèlement les origines et la raison d’être du bâtiment » explique Emmanuel Aïto, directeur de La Cité universitaire francophone et porte-parole du comité de changement de nom de l’édifice Language Institute.

Les origines du bâtiment remontent à 1988. Suite à la décision de la Cour suprême du Canada dans la cause Mercure, les gouvernements fédéral et provincial s’engagent à promouvoir l’éducation en français en Saskatchewan en contexte minoritaire. Un aspect clé de l’action gouvernementale est l’investissement de 10 millions de dollars afin de construire un nouvel édifice sur le campus de l’Université de Regina. Il s'agit du Language Institute, censé être utilisé prioritairement pour l’enseignement du français.

« L’Université donne aujourd’hui l’opportunité à tous les membres de la communauté de participer à la création d’une nouvelle identité pour l’édifice, une identité qui permettra d’avancer vers le futur tout en reconnaissant l’importance de son histoire » dit Vianne Timmons, rectrice de l’Université.

Les propositions de noms sont à soumettre en complétant un sondage en ligne. Le sondage est ouvert du mercredi 29 novembre au mardi 19 décembre 2017 à minuit. Toutes les propositions de noms seront reçues par le comité du changement de nom; le comité fera par la suite une recommandation d’un nouveau nom à la rectrice de l’université qui prendra la décision finale.

University of Regina asks for public input on new name for Language Institute Building

The University of Regina is looking for input on a new name for the Language Institute Building.

Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and the wider community are invited to suggest up to three different names for the building and explain why the names better reflect the purpose and history of the building.

“The Language Institute, located on the University’s main campus, was inaugurated in 1991 under its current name by former Governor General Jeanne Sauvé. For many years now, a discussion within the local community has generated the sentiment that the current name doesn’t adequately reflect the origins and purpose of the building,” explains Dr. Emmanuel Aïto, Director of La Cité universitaire francophone and Chair of the Language Institute Building Renaming Committee.

The building’s origins date back to 1988. Following the Supreme Court of Canada’s Mercure decision, the federal and provincial governments committed to supporting minority French education in Saskatchewan. Key to their action plan was the investment of $10 million for the construction of the new Language Institute Building, to be used primarily for the teaching of French.

“This is an opportunity for everyone in the community to help us create a new identity for the Language Institute – one that takes us into the future while recognizing the important history of the building,” said President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Vianne Timmons.

Ideas can be submitted through an online survey, which is open from Wednesday, November 29 to Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at midnight. The committee will review submissions and make a recommendation to President Vianne Timmons, who will make the final choice.
