Here’s your opportunity to be a part of Treaty 4 celebrations at the University of Regina.

The annual Glen Anaquod Memorial Tipi Raising Competition takes places September 29 on campus.

This is the 10th year for this event, which attracts more people each year.

“We’re proud to offer the tipi raising competition again this year here at the U of R,” says Misty Longman, manager of the Aboriginal Student Centre, which co-ordinates the event each year at the U of R. “The competition emphasizes the importance of the tipi, culturally and educationally, all the while building the spirit of teamwork and all done in a fun environment.”

The competition categories include high school, women, campus, and community.

The event is named after the late Glen Anaquod who was from the Muscowpetung First Nation in Saskatchewan. Anaquod was a cultural and traditional advisor at the U of R until his passing in 2011

The Anaquod family attends the annual event and the women in Anaquod’s life perform the noon-hour tipi raising demonstration for the afternoon teams. It was Anaquod's long-standing wish to continue to involve the University community by hosting this competition with a cultural spin.

“You don’t need any experience to take part in this event. Our judges also act as coaches helping the different teams. We also offer two demonstrations throughout the day,” says Longman. “People who have taken part in this event tell us how much fun it is and we often have returning teams.”

The tipi raising competition takes place at the Dr. Lloyd Barber Academic Green.

Teams have several slots to choose from starting at 10 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

A free lunch for all participants is served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and free parking is available.
