President's Medal recipient reflects on her U of R experience

Cyrena Lockert admits she wasn’t aware of the U of R’s President’s Medal until she received an email encouraging students to apply for the honour.
Lockert did just that and on October 20, she will walk across the stage at Fall Convocation where President Dr. Vianne Timmons will present her with the medal.
There’s more to celebrate. Lockert has also earned the Dean’s Medal from the Faculty of Business Administration.
Lockert is graduating with a Business Administration Degree from the U of R’s Paul Hill School of Business as well as a Certificate in Economics.
“I was very excited when I heard I got the President’s medal,” says Lockert. “I didn’t know what the competition was going to be like. I’ve known other business students who have done some pretty incredible things but they did not win this medal. So I didn’t think I had the best of chances.”
Cyrena’s Top 5 pieces of advice for students:1. Get involved. There are endless organizations out there that would be lucky to have you. 2. Put yourself out there. You never know how many times an opportunity is going to present itself. 3. Learn from lessons put in front of you. Even if it’s an experience you didn’t want, do your best to make something out of it. 4. Enjoy the journey. Always take time to have fun and celebrate your accomplishments 5. Good music, good friends, and strong coffee can get you through even the worst exams |
Only two students, an undergraduate and a graduate, receive a President’s medal at Convocation.
The medal acknowledges a student who has shown academic excellence and major leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities.
Lockert was always involved in school events while at Miller Comprehensive High School in Regina. She kicked it up a notch at the U of R.
Among her notable extra curricular achievements:
- President of the Hill Business Students’ Society
- Made the Hill Case Competition into an international event with 112 students.
- Volunteer coordinator for ‘5 days for the Homeless
- Personally volunteered countless hours at various charities.
“A lot of what I got out of my community involvement provided me with real-life experience,” says Lockert. “I had the opportunity to work with people in the community and learned first-hand what it is like being a business professional.”
Currently, she is exploring her career opportunities.
“The U of R is a unique place. We have one of the most welcoming and integrated universities,” says Lockert. “In the Business Faculty, everything is about teamwork whether in group projects or working in extracurricular activities. It has all been pretty incredible.”
