Artist opportunity - applications accepted for the next Sereda artist residency

The memory of much-loved artist Michele Sereda continues to burn brightly at the University of Regina.
For the third year, the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance (MAP) has put out a call for applicants for the Michele Sereda Artist Residency in Socially-Engaged Practice, established in memory of the artist who died in a car accident in 2015.
Sereda, who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama in 1990 from Luther College, was the founder and Artistic Director of Curtain Razors Theatre. For many years, she was an inspiration to Regina’s arts community. In further recognition of her contributions, Regina City Council recently approved a park be named in Sereda’s name.
“We are pleased to continue offering this residency,” says Kathleen Irwin, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance. “It is a tremendous opportunity for a professional artist interested in exploring socially engaged practice and community interaction and it absolutely reflects Michele’s creative energy and focus.”
The residency will run for five months beginning January 2018 and includes a stipend of $10,000 cdn. The deadline to apply is October 31.
“We are looking for artists who work at the intersection of word/text and art,” says Irwin. “We encourage applications from writers such as poets, critics, playwrights, script writers, novelists, graphic novelists, short story writers, print makers, and artists/performers who use text centrally in the work.”
This is the third time MAP has offered the Sereda residency.
“We’ve partnered successfully with the faculties of Education, Business, and Social Work,” says Irwin. “This time, we are working with the Dr. John Archer Library – a partnership that fits very well with the residency’s focus this year.”
There’s an extra incentive for artists to apply. The artist’s work will be showcased at the Congress for the Humanities and Social Sciences in June 2018, when more than 7,000 attendees will gather at the U of R for Canada’s largest academic gathering.
