There was plenty to celebrate about for U of R Press at the 2018 Saskatchewan Book Awards, held April 29 at the Conexus Arts Centre in Regina.

U of R Press, the University’s publishing house, received 13 nominations and won four awards.

Three of the four winning books took top spot for excellence in publishing.

They are:

“The three Saskatchewan Book Awards for excellence in publishing are a testament to the creativity and hard work of the publishing team. They blow me away every day,” says Bruce Walsh, Director and Publisher of U of R Press.

The fourth award went to Kathleen Carlisle for Fiery Joe: The Maverick Who Lit Up the West. Her book was nominated in three categories and won the Jennifer Welch Scholarly Award. Carlisle’s book tells the story of the meteoric rise and fall of Joe Phelps, a cabinet minister who played a pivotal role while serving under Premier Tommy Douglas.

“Kathleen’s Fiery Joe is most deserving of the award. A true Saskatchewan story, it’s beautifully written and tells how an individual faced down obstacles to make a difference,” says Walsh.

The latest accolades build on a long list of recent success stories at U of R Press, Saskatchewan’s only scholarly publishing house.

It was launched in 2013 and since then has published seven national bestsellers.

There are many reasons to celebrate U of R Press’ upcoming five-year anniversary.

Says Walsh: “We turn five in June and I hope to have a big announcement to coincide with the anniversary. There’s more to come.”

We’ll keep you posted.
