Abstract

Human development indicates the development of people’s abilities and the creation of an enabling environment for people to make use of these opportunities. Communication through the use of natural language plays an important role in the search for development, whether human, social, political, technological, or any other form of development. This study examine show the acquisition of the French language can contribute to human development in Nigeria (a country surrounded by French speaking nations), holding that bilingualism in English and French will bring about great communicative, interactive, diplomatic and informative, educative, economic benefits to Nigerians. Opportunities and potentialities await Nigerians, young and old, both within and outside the country as bilingualism is highly seen to facilitate a fuller development of the human person. The research begins with the theory and concept of language policy and human development. The research also examines the geographical and social context of Nigeria, the human development of Nigeria, and the importance and benefits of the French language in Nigeria. To conclude, the research recommends that the government of Nigeria provide a language policy that will improve and promote a multilingual society. It also encourages the government to provide major funding for both local and official languages of the country.
