Abstract

The Shift, a novella written in four parts: “Meredith,” “Breckenridge,” “The Letters,” and “Coda” examines the relationship between a mother and her daughter during an eco-apocalypse in Regina, Saskatchewan. This manuscript challenges the traditional conventions of the novella while exploring melancholy, estrangement, solastalgia, aspects of the Anthropocene, and one’s connection to the land. The Shift also examines definitions of dystopian fiction and emotional realism while drawing inspiration from prominent Canadian women writers.
