Abstract

The Nexen Long Lake Project utilizes SAGD (Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage) to produce bitumen that is buried well below the earth’s surface, but the process is energy intensive and requires large volumes of water. Nexen is interested in Expanding Solvent SAGD (ES-SAGD) which uses less steam and produces more bitumen than traditional SAGD, resulting in reduced environmental impact, increased production, and reduced energy costs.
