Event celebrates Engineering students' success & generosity of donors

When University of Regina Engineering student Femi Adeyoju learned that she had received the $20,000 Mary Denise Dopko Jackson Award, tears of relief and joy ran down her face.
"I was in shock," she says. "The award has had a very big impact on me."
Speaking at the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science's 53rd annual Scholarships and Awards Reception on February 27, Adeyoju, along with her Engineering student colleagues, expressed gratitude to the people and organizations who support their studies.
In 2019, the Faculty received more than $437,000 from 58 donors to support 259 scholarships, awards, and bursaries. Sixty-eight scholarships, awards, and bursaries were handed out at yesterday's event, including non-monetary prizes and medals. The event also recognizes Engineering students who are named to the Dean's Honour List. A total of 145 full-time Engineering students, who achieved a GPA of 85% or higher, were added to the Dean's list in 2019.
"With the generosity of our donors, we are able to recognize our students' excellence and success with these scholarships," says Dr. Esam Hussein, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science.
The youngest of five children, Adeyoju and her family immigrated to Regina from Nigeria when she was 10 years old. Her parents hoped that Canada would provide better education opportunities for their children.
"I think they made a very wise decision to come here," says Adeyoju, who plans to use her award to help pay off her students loans - which, until now, have been a daily source of stress.
"Just knowing that someone apart from my parents sees potential in me, wants to help me achieve my goals, and is making a commitment to support me in reaching my goals, makes me feel seen. I had an exam the other day, and I had confidence walking into that exam, because I know that somebody believes in me," she says.
A number of donors attended the awards event, including Lynden Penner, president of J.D. Mollard and Associates. Penner had the opportunity to personally recognize the recipient of this year's J.D. Mollard and Associates Limited Prize, Gagandeep Singh, an Environmental Systems Engineering student in his final year of undergraduate studies.
"We (J.D. Mollard and Associates) have a strong affinity for the engineering community and student community," says Penner, who also teaches a course on terrain analysis in the University's Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science. "It's nice to be able to encourage the students in their studies and give them a pat on the back for their hard work. I've always been really impressed by the range of awards that are given out at this event, and the high achievements that the students make."
During the reception, Singh and Penner were able to talk about Singh's capstone project, which involves designing passing lanes on a Saskatchewan highway to improve safety and reduce congestion.
Singh says the J.D. Mollard and Associates Prize has helped him continue to pursue his passion for Engineering and motivated him to keep working hard in both his studies and career.
"It was a great honour and pleasure to see Mr. Lynden Penner at the awards ceremony," says Singh, who recently took Penner's course on terrain analysis. "I also felt a sense of appreciation for J.D. Mollard and Associates Limited for their recognition of my hard work. The generous contribution towards my tuition has definitely helped me continue my education, and has brought me one step closer to pursuing my passion for Engineering."
